The City of
Winchester
Winchester is a wonderful City to
experience and explore. We know! Moving here from London
in 2003 we have never looked back and still have much
to see and do. Dominated by one of the most magnificent
Cathedrals in Europe, the town is steeped in history.
Moreover attractions such as Stonehenge, Portsmouth's
Historic Dockyard and the unspoilt countryside of the
New Forest National Park are just a short distance away.
For children Marwell Zoo, the Intech 'hands on' science
centre and the beaches of the south coast are easily
accessible.
The City is full of treasures to discover
- as well as the Cathedral and the Castle Great Hall
containing the Arthurian Round Table, there are numerous
museums, galleries, medieval buildings and green spaces
to explore. Jane Austen lived in the town and you will
soon appreciate why. Everything is within easy walking
distance of No. 32 making a car unnecessary to enjoy
a stay here unless you wish to wander further afield.
The River Itchen at the bottom of
the town is one of the cleanest and prettiest chalk
streams in England, rightly famous for its trout fishing
and the watercress beds situated beside it. St Catherine's
Hill, just outside the town has the site of an ancient
fort and maze at its summit and affords fantastic views
of the City and the surrounding downs.
A shopper's paradise, Winchester has
all the High Street names you would expect as well as
a whole host of independent boutique's selling unique
and unusual clothes, gifts and household items. The
Square in the heart of the shopping area is one of the
oldest parts of the City and the site of William the
Conquerer's Treasury.
